FEBRUARY WRAP UP & BOOK HAUL + MARCH TBR

February is such a short month! Any of you not have your birthday this year because of the missing 29th? Anyway, here’s all of the books I read and bought in February, and my plans for March!

TOP GIRLS

One off of the TBR, and it’s a good start to the month! I read this through a mix of just reading the script, and following whilst watching the televised version. Like the one book I read last month, this one was also for my English Lit class.

Act I was amazing, Act 2 was okay, and Act 3 paled in comparison. Perhaps because I didn’t really care enough for the characters in the second and third acts… In any case, 3/5 stars.

HAPPINESS

So, you probably don’t know this, but I work in a bookshop every Sunday. It’s REALLY quiet at this time of year, and I spend a lot of time alone at the till, so it’s a perfect time to just take a book off the shelf and read whilst there are no customers waiting. I read this book over two days work.

The book was pretty good. The first half was better than the second, and I felt that the second half could have done with some more research to back up its points. I also felt the author’s biases towards certain professions *cough*law*cough* coming through, which annoyed me a bit and undermined the message somewhat. That being said, it was still insightful and accessible. 3/5 stars.

BIRTHDAY GIRL

Okay, so you might notice that there are quite a lot of short books on this list (in fact this one is a short story) and I’m gonna give you a quick explanation: I work in a bookshop, and it’s very quiet at this time of year. Which means that when I spend several hours on the till, I have very little to do. So I read short books.

That being said, I’ve been wanting to read some of Murakami’s work for a while now, and I figured that this would be a good place to start seeing as it is literally just one single story. I ended up really enjoying his writing style and although I’m still confused by the ending, I like how it made me think. 4/5 stars and I think I’ll be looking into some more of his work.

THE TINDER BOX

Okay, so my work-time reading has now resulted in me reading literary fiction, non-fiction and classic fairytales. I’m liking this variety.

This collection includes: The Tinder Box, Little Claus and Big Claus, The Princess and the Pea, The Steadfast Tin Soldier, The Nightingale, and The Red Shoes. Some of these (like The Princess and the Pea and the Tin Soldier) are stories I remember fondly from my childhood, but my favourite of the collection is one that was completely new to me: The Nightingale! That story would get a 4/5 stars, but overall the collection gets a solid 3/5.

THE SUN AND HER FLOWERS

I read this book at work, too, but I loved it so much that I bought the copy I had been reading. It made me tear up, think, and in general had a very profound impact on me. You can find my review for this book here. 5/5 stars!

I WILL MARRY WHEN I WANT

My English Lit teacher asked us to summarise what we thought of this book in 15 words: The play is 60% songs, 30% history, and 10% plot. Historically interesting, but not engaging. 2/5 stars.

I have more books than just this that I should probably read, in fact I actually have 5 books that I am currently reading, of which I have only included 2 here, because I want to just slowly work my way through them.

After Dark by Haruki Murakami is a book that I plan on reading with Adele of Bookish Della after having read Birthday Girl by him this month and loving it.

Perfume by Patrick Süskind is a book I have been reading for about half a year. I’m about half way through and really enjoying it, I just need to dedicate my time to finishing it.

Window Horses by Ann Marie Fleming is a book that I have for review from Edelweiss. I’m currently about 75% through reading it, so I should be able to finish and review it fairly quickly!
